Simplifying Issue Management Tracking

Technology creates greater traceability, smoother collaboration and quicker insight into program metrics. Because McKean recognized the need to identify and document defects in diverse engineering environments, our team created a product defect Issue Management Tool (IMT) that accomplished all of these goals.

CHALLENGE:

McKean’s challenge was to develop a Web-based too that allows for review of product defect data by a number of technical organizations. The tool also needed to provide workflow tailoring –still enforcing consistent structure – and adherence to the customer’s Systems Engineering Process Group (SEPG) guidelines using permissions-based rights.

SOLUTION:

Given the IMT design, a product team, regardless of the size, can quickly document their process as well as record engineering review information. With the Web-based architecture, geography is no longer a limiter, and insight into team performance is instantaneous. Administrative record keeping is also reduced.

SUCCESS:

Since the tool was launched in 2008, team members have been quick to embrace it. Usage is up, product defects are caught earlier, lessons learned are captured, decision-making data is more accessible and complete and the overall lifecycle costs have been reduced by 15%. This is another example of how the McKean team is transforming the business of the Navy by implementing sound systems engineering practices to solve historical problems.
